Top 5 things to know about Electric scooters on the road in India today

Ever since the Indian Government has decided to adopt renewable and sustainable energy sources, the country’s goal has shifted to increasing promotion of electric vehicles as a means of transport to a pollution free country.

As a result, our Govt has introduced a few incentives like capital, interest subsidies, fiscal incentives and viability gap funding and others.

The Government’s subsidies for electric cars, electric bikes and scooters is a very big step to making change. If you see an electric scooter on the road in 2020, you should know these 5 things about E-scooters in India.

1.      The National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP 2020)

The NEMMP was announced by the Indian Govt to incentivize use, production of Evs, to mitigate environmental impacts and to enhance the energy security in India. It is understood that the electric scooters have positive implications for the nation and as per the Press Information Bureau, the Govt of India aimed to provide fiscal and monetary incentives to start the nascent technology. With all this support from the Govt, it was expected to reach 15-16 million by 2020 in the cumulative sale. And now, in 2020, we can see electric scooters on the road and the dream has come true.

2.      FAME India Scheme

As a part of NEMMP 2020, the FAME India - Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India was covered under Union Budget for 2015 to 2016 with an initial outlay of Rs.75 Cr. The Government announced the incentives offered on electric and hybrid vehicles includes e-scooters of upto 29K and about Rs.1.38L for cars under this scheme.

As per this scheme, the electric scooters and motorcycles will be eligible for incentives starting from Rs.1800 to Rs.29000 depending on the technology and battery.

  1. No License and No registration required

There is no need to register by the road transport authorities for the scooters in India that top the speed capped at 25km per hour. Since they are not motorbikes, you need not worry about availing a license to drive on the road. (As per sources in 2015)

  1. Affordable not expensive

The prices are very low when compared to the bikes or scooters which usually cost more than Rs.50K. There is a popular belief that the e-scooters are extremely expensive which is in fact not true. The average price of an electric scooter in India ranges between Rs.30,000 to Rs.50,000. After including the subsidy by our Indian Government, it comes down to a low value.

  1. Advancement in the world of technology

In 2015, most new-age startups were focusing on developing the electric scooters which are technology enabled ones. First, the prototype of the e-scooters was developed by Ather Energy which featured smartphone connectivity, various driving modes and navigation. Later, the company added real-time traffic data. With this extensive interaction led by the company, it was found that the owners of the electric vehicle loved the technology but the design. Later on, the incorporation of tech and exquisite design, the e-scooter manufacturers aimed to launch in the market.

Hope this helped you how the e-scooters we see on the road today were tapped into the market after all the journey from production to reaching the end user.
