Pros and Cons of electric vehicle in India.

 Pros:

1, Savings on fuel expenditure (running cost of an EV is going to be only 10% of a petrol vehicle, this includes fuel cost and maintenance cost).

2, Zero emission. This is one of the ways we can contribute to creating a greener future for our future generation.

3, Zero noise pollution. EVs are very silent. The electric motor is very silent when compared with the explosive petrol engine, hence the ride is very quiet.

4, Lesser or no vibration. Since there are fewer moving parts in an EV the vibrations are very low and hence the ride is very comfortable.

5, Higher efficiency. The BLDC motor used in most of the EVs are very efficient. Average efficiency of an BLDC motor is about 80% to 92% this is very high compared to a petrol engine’s efficiency of about 40% to 50%.

6, Easy to make DIY (do it yourself) kits. EVs are highly modular and can be customized or modified easily. There are only 3 main functional modules in an EV, the battery, controller and motor. These 3 can be setup in n number of combinations to get a completely customized experience.

7, Easy to service. The components in EV are built in modules and servicing these parts is basically just replacement of the part. So the serviceability factor in EVs is very good.

Cons (in India):

1, The EV market in India is still pretty young and the charging infrastructure still has a long way to go. The charging grid needs to become denser to enable seamless travel over longer distance. The current EV ecosystem is capable of supporting intra city travel only. Most EV owners purchase electric vehicles for short intra city office commute only.

2, Standardization of EV components. There are almost 200 EV brands right now in India but there is no standard in place for the various components of and EV. This lack of standard across industry makes it difficult to procure spare for different models.

3, Poor service support. Since the EV industry is pretty young many EV manufacturers are focusing only on sales of EV and the after sale service takes the back seat. EV companies need to arrange for training session to educate the service technicians.
